PENNY MIDAS ROLLO   personal site

background

Over many years, evenings mainly, while my three sons were growing up (single parents don't get out much), I built the Project HappyChild website (non-profit) which reached 100 million visits on 3rd April 2011. The original reason for building the site was to highlight a range of UK-based charities helping children, the ones now shown in the Project HappyChild Directory.

Because of the timeframe within which it was built, the site includes a huge Pokémon area (still very popular) and a smaller one for Harry Potter, though it has been the tens of thousands of free worksheets (maths and languages, mainly) that have led to the huge visit levels (still ongoing). My personal thanks for volunteer help from across the world, particularly for the free dual-language worksheets (12 languages to English now, including French, Russian, Romanian, Polish, Arabic, Urdu etc.) which helped make all this possible.

other stuff

Back in 2003 I built the website for The Illuminated Bible (one verse per page) and in 2012 I built KJV Daily (one chapter per page). Both sites were updated in July 2018 and I've finally figured out the programming so you can go backwards as well as forwards through the verses, in The Illuminated Bible. That might sound a bit strange but check out Genesis Ch1 v1 (use the crosses either side of the verse); often there's the wish to go back and re-read something, which was less straightforward previously.

In June 2016 (just before the EU Referendum) I put together a comment page which identifies some of the reasons *why* the UK voted to LEAVE, and was subsequently involved in creating "The People's Brexit Roadmap" (sent to Cabinet members before that first meeting at Chequers on 31/08/16). Like many people I was hopeful that our politicians intended to deliver on their promises. The intervening years (2016-2024) have been a wake-up call, in more ways than one.

First screenplay finally completed.   "The Silent Revolution"

Screenplay/script plus character map, locations map, notes + references now available to Industry Professionals (free to read) via InkTip [listing classified as 'high concept' 'drama' 'Andy Banks' (co-writer)].

Spare-time project ongoing to scan the (historical) pagebuilding for the Project HappyChild website.

Currently using the ET18 PRO scanner from DH Innovation in Dundee. Brilliant scanner (A5/A4/A3) (scans face-up). Highly recommended.

YouTube playlists (random). Background music whilst scanning - sound level 4% so advertising less audible.

Playlist 1 Playlist 2.

A collection of *significant* links (mainly from a pagebuilding perspective).

video tapes

One evening in July 2023 I went looking for how to convert video tapes to MP4 files. Brilliant youtube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNPvHdwyoWI (12:04). That same day I bought these three items from amazon (scart-hdmi as the video recorder here had scart lead/s not the red/yellow/white wires on the YT video).

When bought items connected together, downloaded OBS studio (*free*) from https://obsproject.com/download. Took me a while to figure things out but second YT video helpful here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpzJhujEs-8 (17:06) (watch from 08:30).

I'm probably the least-techie person you'll ever meet - and I was amazed how straightforward it was. Once the amazon-items were connected together and OBS downloaded, it took a couple of hours to figure out how to get good quality MP4-output with minimal Mb/Gb (if lots of tapes to be processed, MP4-storage may be relevant).

... save the settings on OBS ... input a tape, press play, press record on OBS - three hours later, press stop on OBS ... rinse and repeat. If you have access to a video recorder that doesn't chew up tapes, the cost of the wires/converters is just £26 (for processing an unlimited number of tapes/MP4s).

gerberas

I do love orange gerberas, but so often they droop after only a day or two. Recently I wondered if a piece of plastic tubing might help (?)

Amazingly, it did. Translucent plastic PVC tubing - length: 3m, o/d 10mm, i/d 8mm, price £5.99. The 3m length of tubing was enough (approx) for 24 x 5" tubes.
